Youth Team

The Youth Team is a volunteer program for 12 – 18 year olds working to fulfill the Red Cross mission, to help prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.  The Youth Team participates in various community service projects benefiting the Red Cross and the Rappahannock Area community.

During the school year (September through June), the Youth Team is active on weekday evenings and weekends. During the meetings, team members participate in small service projects and plan larger monthly projects.   Some of our school year projects include:

  • Hope House Festival of Trees
  • Fredericksburg’s Christmas Parade
  • Rappahannock River Clean Up
  • Rock Up Your Sleeve Blood Drive
  • Measles Initiative
  • Assisting with special events
  • Planning Youth Team projects
  • And lots more!!

To Join the Youth Team:

All youth must attend a New Volunteer Orientation.  Orientations are held at the Chapter (
4836 Southpoint Parkway) approximately twice per month.   New Volunteer Orientation dates and times can be found here.  After attending the New Volunteer Orientation, youth will be able to attend Youth Team Meetings, participate in Youth Team projects, and train to volunteer with any American Red Cross services.

Youth Services

In addition to all of our volunteer activities for youth, the Rappahannock Area Chapter offers *free* Red Cross courses to area youth in schools and summer camps.  Some of the courses we teach are:

SCRUBBY BEAR

Ideal for grades PreK-1

Students learn the basics of proper handwashing and how to avoid germs in this 30-45 minute course.

WHALE TALES

Ideal for grades K-2

This one hour water safety course teaches students how to be safe and have fun at the pool or at the beach.  Basic pool rules are reviewed and discussed, including interactive experiments to demonstrate.  A fun video concludes the lesson.

BE RED CROSS READY

Ideal for grades 2-5

This one hour course teaches the basics of emergency preparedness.  Students learn how to prepare a proper disaster kit and create an emergency evacuation plan for their home.  The lesson utilizes worksheets and group participation.

MASTERS OF DISASTER

Ideal for grades 3-4

This two hour course teaches children the science of natural disasters, including tornadoes, lightning, earthquakes, flash floods, and hurricanes.  The lesson is reinforced with interactive games, such as “Hurricane House,” where students try to build a house out of construction paper and other miscellaneous materials that could withstand hurricane winds.  A Jeopardy game is played at the end for review.

BASIC AID TRAINING (BAT)

Ideal for grades 3-6

This 1.5 hour course teaches students the basics of first aid.  Topics covered include knowing what to do in an emergency, and how to treat burning, severe bleeding, choking, broken bones, and several types of bites and stings.  Students are able to practice the skills they learn and play BAT Feud for review.

All of these courses are offered free of charge.  To learn more or to schedule an instructor to come to your school or camp to teach one of these lessons, contact Nina Schwandt at schwandtn@usa.redross.org or 540-739-0509.
