Step 2: Volunteer Opportunities

The Rappahannock Area Chapter of the American Red Cross offers a wide variety of rewarding volunteer opportunities! We will gladly work with you to find the position that best fits your interests and time requirements.

Emergency and International Services

Disaster Action Team (DAT) Member: Trained disaster volunteers are on-call outside of Chapter office hours to respond to the scene of a fire or other emergency in order to provide aid and comfort to disaster victims. The volunteers are generally on-call for a one week period once every other month. Training Provided.

Community Disaster Education Presenter: Volunteers teach disaster preparedness to schools, businesses and organizations.

Armed Forces Emergency Services Caseworker: Trained caseworkers provide assistance with sending emergency messages to military personnel and their families.

Armed Forces Emergency Services Military Briefing Volunteer: Volunteers present information to members of the U.S. Armed Forces prior to their deployment regarding the services that the Red Cross provides to military personnel and their families.

International Social Services Tracing Volunteer: Trained volunteers help locate missing family members separated by armed conflict or disaster.

International Social Services Committee Member: Members educate the local international community on the work of the American Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Health and Safety Services

Health and Safety Instructor: As a trained and certified Red Cross instructor, individuals teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED), water safety and/or lifeguarding courses. Training provided.

Health and Safety Community Outreach Volunteer: Volunteers educate the community about the classes.

First Aid Safety Team Member: Provide First Aid services and information to the public at Red Cross and community events. Open to adults as well as youth ages 14 and up. Training Provided.

Youth Services

Youth Team Member: Youth volunteers ages 12-18 plan and implement service projects to help the community. Group meets weekly on Wednesday evenings.

Youth Team Advisor: An adult volunteer opportunity to help inspire and supervise youth volunteers at meetings and projects.

Red Cross Club: Start a Red Cross club with your school or community group! Adult sponsors host and lead students of all ages in Red Cross service learning activities designed to promote positive changes in their community, their school and in the lives of their peers.

Community Services

Letters to Santa Program: Help brighten the holiday season for area children as a volunteer with the Letters to Santa Program. Help with office tasks, assist with adoptions, or help sort and distribute gifts.   

Hospital Volunteer (Mary Washington Hospital): Deliver ice, water, mail or flowers to patients along with a friendly smile. Volunteers needed days and evenings each day of the week. Must be friendly and dependable. Training provided and TB test required.

Heart n’ Hands Volunteer: Knit and crochet caps, mittens, afghans and more for those in need locally and abroad. Group meets every other month from September to May on the first Monday.

Biomedical Services

Blood Services Volunteer: Welcome and register blood donors and staff the canteen at the Donor Center (located at the Chapter office) or area blood drives. Day and evening shifts available.

Financial Development

Bash in the Burg Annual Fundraiser: We need your help to make the 14th annual the Bash in the Burg the best event of the year. Help by planning the event, soliciting sponsors, request auction items and more! Committee members meet monthly in the fall!

Heroes Campaign: Help celebrate community heroes while raising money to support the efforts of the local chapter. Program runs from October to June.

We are here because of you campaign: Distribute campaign information within your work or social circle.

Marketing and Communications

Public Affairs Volunteers: Work with the media to inform the public about what Red Cross services are being provided during a disaster response.

Operations

Reception Volunteers: Help with answering the phones and greeting visitors to the Chapter office. Reception volunteers may also assist with other office tasks as needed. Help as little as 4 hours per shift on a regular or substitute basis. Volunteers currently most needed for Thursdays and Fridays.

Human Resources/Volunteer Services

Recognition Committee Members: Help recognize the work of Red Cross volunteers by planning our annual recognition event and selecting recipients for volunteer awards. Committee meets monthly.

 

Orientation Presenter: Welcome potential volunteers to the Chapter by presenting the one hour New Volunteer Orientation session one or two evenings each month. Training provided.

 

Historic Preservation Volunteer: Help research and record our Chapter’s history. Assist with cataloging and dating historical items and with creating themed historical displays.
